🔥 BEST OF THE WEB: Psywar: AI bots manipulate your feelings
The next chapter in the Social Media battle to splinter reality, the internet, and your own mind Splinternet (as defined per Grok): The splinternet refers to the fragmentation of the internet into separate, often isolated networks due to political, cultural, technological, or commercial reasons. It describes a scenario where the internet is no longer a unified global system but is instead divided into distinct "splinters" or subnetworks. The term highlights how these divisions limit universal access to information and create digital borders, often reflecting real-world geopolitical tensions or differing values on privacy, security, and free expression. Elon asked a key question. This is not dark humor or sarcasm; this is today's reality:

🔥 Exclusive: Putin's demands for peace include an end to NATO enlargement, sources say
President Vladimir Putin's conditions for ending the war in Ukraine include a demand that Western leaders pledge in writing to stop enlarging NATO eastwards and lift a chunk of sanctions on Russia, according to three Russian sources with knowledge of the negotiations. U.S. President Donald Trump has repeatedly said he wants to end the deadliest European conflict since World War Two and has shown increasing frustration with Putin in recent days, warning on Tuesday the Russian leader was "playing with fire" by refusing to engage in ceasefire talks with Kyiv as his forces made gains on the battlefield. After speaking to Trump for more than two hours last week, Putin said that he had agreed to work with Ukraine on a memorandum that would establish the contours of a peace accord, including the timing of a ceasefire. Russia says it is currently drafting its version of the memorandum and cannot estimate how long that will take. Kyiv and European governments have accused Moscow of stalling...

Strikes have hit vital strategic installations, hydroelectric power plants, civilian and oil facilities, and the Port Sudan port and airport, in a flagrant attack on the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Sudan. 🌐 When East and West can't meet: Between Leviathan, Behemoth and Mandala
The first ever ASEAN-China-GCC trilateral summit earlier this week in Malaysia - with 17 Global South nations at the table - was a de facto celebration of the New Silk Road spirit. Malaysian Prime Minister and current ASEAN chair Anwar Ibrahim summed it all up: "From the ancient Silk Road to the vibrant maritime networks of Southeast Asia to modern trade corridors, our peoples have long connected through commerce, culture, and the sharing of ideas." The European tradition is far from monolithic - and it's only part of the picture - when it comes to global perceptions about political philosophy and the conception of the State. There are stark differences even when referred to Hobbes, Locke and Rousseau....

If Trump wants to restore the trust in our government that was so badly damaged under Biden, he must comprehensively reform the government's records management ecosystem. As a federal records management consultant with more than 25 years of experience supporting White House and agency records management at all levels of the government, I can assure you nothing in this article is even remotely true. Let's begin with the article's opening claim: "For generations, official American documents have been meticulously preserved and protected ... safeguarding snapshots of the government and the nation for posterity." While this may have been true decades ago when almost all government records were maintained on paper, it has not been true in the digital age.

❄️ The subtle art of the mathematical conjecture
It's an educated guess, not a proof. But a good conjecture will guide math forward, pointing the way into the mathematical unknown. Mountain climbing is a beloved metaphor for mathematical research. The comparison is almost inevitable: The frozen world, the cold thin air and the implacable harshness of mountaineering reflect the unforgiving landscape of numbers, formulas and theorems. And just as a climber pits his abilities against an unyielding object — in his case, a sheer wall of stone — a mathematician often finds herself engaged in an individual battle of the human mind against rigid logic. In mathematics, the role of these highest peaks is played by the great conjectures — sharply formulated statements that are most likely true but for which no conclusive proof has yet been found. These conjectures have deep roots and wide ramifications. The search for their solution guides a large part of mathematics. Eternal fame awaits those who conquer them first. Remarkably, mathematics...

🔥 Stunning meteor fireball over southern Spain (May 28)
This stunning bolide was spotted from Spain on May 28, at 1:13 local time (equivalent to 23:13 universal time on May 27). It was almost as bright as the full Moon. The event was generated by a rock (a meteoroid) from a comet that hit the atmosphere at about 146,000 km/h. The fireball overflew the provinces of Granada and Córdoba (southern Spain). It began at an altitude of about 114 km over the locality of Romilla (province of Granada), moved northwest, and ended at a height of around 76 km over the locality of La Fuente Grande (province of Córdoba). This bright meteor was recorded in the framework of the SMART project, operated by the Southwestern Europe Meteor Network (SWEMN) from the meteor-observing stations located at Huelva, La Hita (Toledo), Calar Alto, Sierra Nevada, La Sagra (Granada), Sevilla, and Otura (Granada). The event has been analyzed by the principal investigator of the SMART project: Dr. Jose M. Madiedo, from the Institute of Astrophysics of Andalusia (IAA-CSIC)....

🔥 Night sky turns to day as meteor fireball streaks over China on May 28
On the evening of May 28, a rare fireball meteor phenomenon occurred over Maoming, Guangdong Province, and surrounding areas, drawing widespread attention. At around 9:30 pm, a sudden, intense flash of light appeared in the night sky, momentarily illuminating the ground as if it were daylight. The brightness was so extreme that it startled people who witnessed it — even flocks of ducks in nearby farms were frightened and scattered in panic. According to multiple surveillance camera recordings, the meteor had a light trail that shifted from orange-yellow to blue-green and was far brighter than a typical meteor. Gou Lijun, an expert at the National Astronomical Observatories of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, confirmed it was a fireball meteor.

⚔️ The Roman massacre that never happened according to a new study of an iconic archaeological site
A new study by archaeologists at Bournemouth University (BU) has revealed that bodies recovered from a 'war-cemetery' previously attributed to the Roman Conquest of Britain at Maiden Castle Iron Age hillfort in Dorset, did not die in a single dramatic event. A re-analysis of the burials, including a new programme of radiocarbon dating, has revealed that, rather than dying in a single, catastrophic event, individuals fell in periods of lethal violence spanning multiple generations, spread across the late first century BC to the early first century AD. This is suggestive of episodic periods of bloodshed, possibly the result of localised turmoil, executions or dynastic infighting during the decades leading up to the Roman Conquest of Britain. BU's Dr Martin Smith, Associate Professor in Forensic and Biological Anthropology, who analysed the bodies said: "The find of dozens of human skeletons displaying lethal weapon injuries was never in doubt, however, by undertaking a systematic...
